At their most basic level scanners are a pc device which convert light into 0s and 1s so the computer can understand it, then convert analogue data into digital data. When buying a scanner it is important to check the resolution, because this relates to the fineness of detail that a scanner can achieve, and is usually measures in dots per inch (dpi). The more dots per inch a scanner can resolve, the more detail the resulting image will have. The typical resolution of an inexpensive desktop scanner at present is 1200 x 2400 dpi.
When look at scanners it is important to check for the quality of the resolution, bit depth and dynamic range. At the moment flatbed scanners are the most versatile and popular format of scanner but you can also find handheld scanners and compact document scanners.

HP Scanjet
This is a nice looking scanner and was easy to install and use. The problems occured because it's just very reliable, lot of times it would often not respond when asked. And to cap it all is now not working. I expected alot more from a HP Scanjet product seeing as they are a major hardware firm. It's a shame because i enjoyed the results and it does the job well when working. The imaging software was also very good, but I'm not happy with the reliabillity of this product.
