 Facts

Rowing Machines are probably the most physically demanding of all fitness equipment. They say to become a good rower you need big hands and feet. Well you don't need this anatomy to use a rowing machine for basic fitness exercises. However before buying one you should realise this is an intensive sport, and you should be careful before using challenging settings. Some of the main brands for rowing machines are,

  • Reebok
  • York
  • Beny
  • Body Sculpture
  • Horizon
  • Tunturi

Things you should look for are,

  • Flywheels for a smooth magnetic and air resistance system.
  • About 8 resistance settings.
  • Large steel footplates.
  • Heavy duty pivoting
  • Adjustable footstraps.
  • Retracting seat track.
  • LCD computer display.

Carl Lewis Fitness ROMF51 Magnetic

The good points are it's easy to put togther and generally well designed and built. One major downside is the seat, there is not enough padding and it starts to get rather uncomfortable when rowing for a prolong period. I am afraid the seat is an essential part of any rowing machine, and this is a major letdown for me. After a few months of use the grips on the handle are also tending to slide off during use. The LCD functions and timing are perfect and the running of the machine is smooth and quiet. Overall a well designed rowing machine, if letdown by a few faults.
