Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lipschitz in October 14th, 1939 in the district of the Bronx, New York. Ralph decided to change his last name from Lipschitz to Lauren. This was a denial of his Jewish heritage, but Ralph considered it necessary for success in 1950's New York. He is famous for having started the company with 26 boxes of ties in 1967, when he purchased the Polo label from Brooks. In the mid 1990s, Ralph Lauren floated his company on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RL. Ralph Lauren has just celebrated the 35th anniversary of a now $10 billion global business in 2003. The company now produces designer menswear, womenswear, childrenswear, home collections and fragrances in 2002. The media has honored Ralph Lauren with cover stories in magzines such as,
