A mouse is an IT device that has become very popular with the increased
use of the Windows operating system. A mouse is an essential tool
in performing the majority of functions on a Windows operating system,
as well as OS2, iMac and Linux / Unix X-windows operating systems.
Before Windows a mouse wasn't needed because the most popular operating
systems about were Dos and Unix, and both of these operating systems
were command line based and didn't need a graphical interface tool.
In the past all mice contained a wire to connect them to either
the PC's serial or USB port. With the advancement of mouse technology
the majority of high-end mice are now wireless, and instead of using
a roller ball they use an infra-red laser for navigation. Another
feature added to mice over the years was the scroll wheel. This
is positioned between the two click buttons, and can be used to
scroll up and down in applications and programs like Internet Explorer,
Microsoft Word and Excel.

Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 Mouse
I eventually decided that I was bored with my roller ball mouse
and looked for a more modern design. I did want a wireless mouse,
but the price put me off them. I decided on the above mouse because
it was comfortable, included a laser, and looks cool in my opinion.
The ergonomics seem ideal, and it's the perfect shape for your hand.
Like most modern MS mice it includes a scroll wheel in the middle,
with the two thumb buttons on the sides of the mouse. You can also
click down the scroll wheel as another feature. The software is
also easy to customise, so the buttons can be changed to perform
a range of functions.
