Memory is basically short term memory and it's architecture makes it much quicker than hard disks, CD-ROM's or floppy drives. Of course like every other component, the more you have the better, a computer will run much quicker with a large amount of memory installed. The different forms of memory are always changing and improving such as EDO SIMMs, SDRAM DIMMs and RDRAM RIMMs to name a few of the recent types of memory. Smaller devices such as digital cameras and mp3 players use memory as well to store data such as pictures, this can then be transferred to a computer by way of a memory card.
