How can I recover money from a lost or forgotten bank account?

Posted - 03/05/12

There has been a number of TV shows in the UK exploring the possibility of reclaiming cash from a lost or forgotten bank account: this may have been an account you own yourself, or one you are entitled to from an inheritance. There is believed to be £300 million of reserves/assets residing in lost and forgotten bank account; this has not gone unnoticed by the UK government, who have announced that cash or assets residing in "inactive" accounts will be reclaimed by the government and placed within a social support scheme after 15 years.

If you do suspect you are entitled to a lost or forgotten bank account, you may be wondering how you go about finding it. The good news is that a website has been launched - for this exact purpose - by the following associations,

  1. BBA - British Bankers Association
  2. BSA - Building Societies Association

The site is located at the following address - http://www.mylostaccount.org.uk/ - which features a search function which covers 43 banks and 47 UK building societies.
