Posted on n/a In the UK, 'knickers' is the most common term used for panties or similar ladies undergarments. Such terms like 'Don't get your knickers in a twist' are therefore only specific to the UK. Of course the name probably derives as a shortened version of 'Knickerbockers', which are loose Dutch undergarments. The 1950's saw a huge revolution in ladies underwear manufacturing. Knickers with printed and colored garments appeared. not just simple pieces of white clothing. The manufacturers like Gossard also experimented with new fabrics like dacron and nylon. 1959 also saw the creation of "tights" (another UK only term) which combined knicker and hose into one garment. They were howvere invented by the American Glen Raven Mills of North Carolina. Current day, the biggest revolution in the knickers business has been the thong.
