Golf is believed to have been first played in Scotland, and the St
Andrew's gold course is seen as the spiritual home of Golf. There is
currently four major professional golf tournaments, one in the UK and
three in the USA - The Open, The Masters, PGA and US Open. The biggest
event in Golf is currently the Ryder Cup played between Europe and the
USA, and is held every two years.
Golf is not the cheapest sport to start playing, the cost of equipment
can be high, especially if you want professional quality.
Clubs
The good news is that it's possible to buy a basic set of clubs from
low cost brands such as Howson for £150. If you want the best
then a set of Titleist clubs can set you back at least £600-£800.
Along with plenty of balls, and a good bag, you can add another £100
on top of this. As a beginner we would recommend at least a medium priced
set of clubs from say Dunlop / Hippo (£200-£400). Golf is
one of the few sports that relays on the quality of equipment used.
A good set of clubs can take shots off your handicap.
Balls
The current regulations dictate that a golf ball should not be less
than 1.680 inches in diameter. The velocity of a ball should not exceed
two hundred and fifty feet per second. This was conducted under recent
test conditions by the R&A. The weight of a golf ball cannot exceed
1.620 ounces. Dimples were first introduced in 1908. It's possible to
buy used and new golf balls. Used golf balls, usually salvaged from
water hazards, are graded (high - low) 'AAAAA' - 'AAAA' - 'AAA' - AA',
the highest being in near perfect condition, and lowest only useful
for practice hitting. Balls are usually designed with either two, three
or four layers, and cater for for numerous playing abilities and styles.
Bags
Made from leather, nylon or cotton. Usually made with a plastic frame,
pockets, a stand and hand/shoulder straps. Heavier bags made from leather
are usually placed on a trolley.
Trolleys
Used for transporting golf bags, some trolleys include a motor/battery
pack to power them.
