Until recently Mitre controlled the whole football industry in
the UK. They were by far the best selling brand, and were used in
all the UK national leagues and international games. This has recently
come under threat by major sports brands such as,
They have all made a concerted effort to dethrone Mitre. They have
done this by creating more technologically advanced footballs, and
by major advertising programs. You will find that in all the major
football tournaments such as the European and World Cup, the football
used is from either Adidas or Nike. Adidas were particularly successful
with their eastern/dragon design for the World Cup in Japan/South
Korea in 2002. Therefore when buying a football nowadays, realise
most kids will want the football used in major tournaments, and
Nike and Adidas are slowly becoming the market leaders. Both in
terms in volume sold and the quality of the football.
Of course when looking for a cheap football none of this matters
much. You can find a good useable football for £5. Mitre do
one for this price, and other lost cost brands such as Lotto have
footballs for this price.
