 Facts

Baby & child car seats are an essential safety item. The seats can be rearward or forward facing and should include basics like an;

  • integral harness
  • one pull harness
  • recline feature
  • child seat that can convert to a booster seat.

Basic guide for car seats at the various ages;

Children under 3 years old
If placed in the front seat, a child restraint must be used. Not just the adult seat belt. Against the law otherwise.

Child Aged 3 to 11 (under around 5 feet)
A child restraint feaure must be worn if available. Otherwise the adult seat belt must be worn.

Currently the best advice when buying a baby/child seat is to make sure it meets the United Nations standard Regulation 44.03. This means look for the 'E' mark when buying.

Britax First Class SI

Britax were the brand recommended to me at my local child care centre, I have recently become a full time childminder, and a mother of three I was looking for something well made and value for money. Please remember that this car seat is only designed for rear facing for a newborn baby up to 10-13kg (22-29lb) ; and suitable for forward facing when your child can sit unaided, weighing from 9-18kg. All the reviews I read said Britax were good quality, and with prices were between £99 and £120 plus delivery it seems value for money.

Summary of Baby & Child Seats

It looks like the law for child restraints in cars is likely to change by 2006. Currently you could face a fine of up to £1,000 for not fitting the correct child restraint.
