Avis are named after the surname of their founder, Warren Avis. Because
Avis were the first ever company to offer airport car rental, they have
remained one of the world's biggest rental companies. The first location
they opened was at Willow Run, Detroit, and humbly, with only three
automobiles. Today, Avis have locations in one hundred and fourteen
countries. Avis first began operating in Europe in 1964. It only took
eight years for the company to become the market leader over the entire
continent. Avis has been listed on the London Stock Market twice, in
1985 and 1997, primarily to increase funding to expand the business.
The 1997 release was to fund further expansion across Asia.

Will be interesting to see the process of renting a car when the bio-metrix id cards come into effect in the UK. Present day it takes along time of form willing and what not to rent a car. And even then these rental firms get turned over on a regular basis by professional criminal gangs.
It's just too easy to forge id papers in todays would and send a brand new car to the chop shop as parts and make yourself a nice bit of money. Of course these gets put onto the rental fee of joe smoe like me, so i am hoping these id cards with bio metric data that cant be forged easily will bring down the rental fees.

Booked a car for our family break in Ireland, went with them because of the low cost, new car, and helpful staff. Since then we have rented with Avis in Dublin and Cork for 2 years now. There rates seem to be very competitive. You hear plenty of horror stories of rental companies.
