They have an excellent range of cables, memory, hard drives
and cases. All their products are priced at a fairly reasonable
rate. They have around 100 stores dotted around the country
with a couple in Greater Manchester. I usually visit their
store at the Fort Retail Park and from my experience they
have a knowledgeable staff to help you find the correct component.
Personally I do not know my SDRAM from my HDD so the staff
are a crucial element of my custom. I have also used their
upgrade service where they will do any complicated work you
are not confident of completing yourself. I have had a custom
built PC on a number of occasions, the reason being that the
off the shelf systems at places like Dixons always include
alot of stuff I do not require. The advantage of a custom
built computer system is there are not unnecessary frills.
Maplin do also cater for the electronics enthusiast as well,
hence the "Maplin Electronics" tag. However, electronics
cables, plugs, and building projects are far too geeky and
advanced for my liking. They may not offer the best value
for money, but they do help make computer and electronics
component shopping a less daunting experience for a clueless
shopper like myself. They seem to include an unsurpassed range
of bizarre cables, and plugs which you are never going to
see at any other high street chain. I haven't particularly
used their website or catalogue before I would need to know
exactly what I require to use them. This position I am never
in :). The whole shopping experience reminds of Tandy, who
have sadly demised now. It's a real odd experience and the
taste of music played in their stores is even stranger. To
sum up I recommended it, oddly.
